VVS Laxman’s NCA stint ends in September, can BCCI keep him in the set-up?

VVS Laxman’s NCA stint ends in September, can BCCI keep him in the set-up?

VVS Laxman’s reluctance to become head coach of the Indian team is an open secret, but with the former batsman’s stint as NCA’s ‘Head of Cricket’ ending in September this year, it remains to be seen how BCCI manages to get him in keep the set up. .

While Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor Gautam Gambhir is considered the favorite among the options available to the BCCI, it is still not clear whether secretary Jay Shah has spoken to the senior stars of the national team about Gambhir’s unanimous acceptability .

Shah issued a statement on Friday denying that he has contacted Australian candidates, also hinting that the board is looking for an Indian coach, who has come through the ranks and knows the cricket ecosystem inside and out.

Laxman seems to be the most obvious successor as the stylish former Hyderabad native has been India’s interim coach during his nearly three-year stint at NCA (National Cricket Academy).

But he has not applied for the position which will be both physically and mentally taxing over the next three and a half years. The last date for submitting applications is May 27.

Should he choose to apply, Laxman would have a strong foundation thanks to the goodwill he enjoys at BCCI’s High-Performance Center as the structural head of the country’s cricket system (India A, Emerging, U-19 and junior women’s cricket). .

The BCCI is also said to want to retain the 49-year-old and may also convince him to agree to the top job.

“It will be entirely up to Jay, but he has to convince VVS to be part of the Indian setup, at least when they play red-ball series,” a former BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“If he is not willing to work full-time, he can always be the advisor when India play big red-ball series in Australia this year and in England next year.”

Obviously, it won’t be very difficult for Laxman to return to the IPL fold after his NCA stint ends as he has a standing offer from at least one franchise. He is also an established commentator and analyst.

“Unlike Rahul (Dravid), who was based from Bengaluru, Laxman had to shift base from Hyderabad. Not to forget his magnanimity when he agreed to work for a lower pay package compared to what he earned as a mentor at Sunrisers Hyderabad and as a pundit at one of the broadcasters.

“So there will be factors, but Laxman’s services should be utilized properly,” the former office-bearer said.

Recently, during a media interaction in Mumbai, Shah made it clear that there will be only one head coach for the national team. But there is a school of thought that Laxman’s expertise in red-ball cricket could be used purely for the format.

Next year, the NCA will be headquartered in its own facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru with several large cricket grounds, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a swimming pool and also a residential complex.

Once Laxman parts ways with NCA, BCCI will need a solid candidate for the post of Head of Cricket. One man who could land the job is current national team batting coach Vikram Rathour.

Rathour has been with NCA for four years as a batting coach and national selector. He has been part of the national team for the past five years and his tenure ends with the T20 World Cup next month.
