Giro d’Italia: ‘Never underestimate the break’ – Benjamin Thomas takes shock win as sprint teams feud on stage 5

Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) took a shock win from the breakaway as the sprinters cursed a weak chase on stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia.

Few could have predicted that the quartet of Thomas, Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ) and Andrea Pietrobon (Polti Kometa) would have fought for victory when they went clear with 77km to go . the intermediate sprint.

But the indecision in the group behind – most teams were reluctant to push forward until it was far too late – meant that at the Flamme Rouge, victory was theirs alone to contest.

Pietrobon was the first to reach out and raced away as his three rivals gaped behind him, but Thomas timed his move to perfection, flying past the flagging Italian and off Valgren’s wheel in the final meters to seal Cofidis’ first win of 2024 claim.
