Dedication of the Oak Grove Cemetery Soldiers’ Monument, May 30, 1913

La Crosse Public Library

Members of the Grand Army of the Republic, the local Wilson Colwell Post, gathered on Memorial Day in 1913 to dedicate the Soldier’s Monument at Oak Grove Cemetery. La Crosse Tribune reported on that day’s ceremony that 1913 would be the last year that the “gray-haired veterans of the Civil War will take an active lead in the ceremonies that keep the memory of their dead comrades green. After this, the remaining old soldiers will pass the burden of the day onto the able and eager shoulders of their sons and the Spanish war veterans.’
