New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the second week at the 2024 French Open with a comfortable straight-set victory over Sebastian Korda in the third round on Friday. The Spaniard, who entered the tournament with an arm injury, dominated proceedings at the Court Philippe-Chatrier and sealed his place in the last 16.

Alcaraz continued his superlative display at Roland Garros, thwarting all attempts by 27th seed Korda to post a 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 victory scoreline. The two-time Grand Slam champion, who is looking to win his third Grand Slam title, started by breaking his opponent’s serve in the first set to take the lead. However, he couldn’t contain the American in the set as he bounced back to pocket him. However, the Spaniard held his nerve to win the tiebreak.

Swiatek’s birthday victory

Reigning champion Iga Swiatek celebrated her 23rd birthday by brushing aside Marie Bouzkova to reach the last 16 of the French Open on Friday. Swiatek had to save a match point to avoid an embarrassing defeat to four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in a second-round thriller, but she was never in trouble during a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Czech Bouzkova .

Swiatek will play Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the next round on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Polish star’s win-loss record at the tournament stands at 32-2 and she has never managed to reach the second week.

Earlier in the day, Jannik Sinner continued his winning streak at Roland Garros with a straight-sets victory over Russian Pavel Kotov in the third round on Friday. In women’s singles, Coco Gauff entered the second week for the fourth year in a row with a dominant victory in the third round. Gauff held off a late fight from Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska to win 6-2, 6-4 in the first match of the day on Court Philippe Chatrier.
