Several West Texas golf teams ended the 2024 golf season in the medal bracket when the season concluded Tuesday for both boys and girls in Austin.

Last week, the Sonora boys golf team took home the program’s first-ever gold medal after scoring a 626 after two days of competition. The Broncos scored nine points ahead of second-place New Home, whom they defeated a week earlier in a regional tournament playoff elimination game.

Dylan Ford, the defending individual state champion, finished tied with Weston Fisher for sixth overall at 149, Jayden Wllborn scored 159, Juan Castillo had 169 and Raul Arrendo rounded out the state title at 179.

“I was so proud of the kids,” Sonora golf coach Mitch Kay said. “I was extremely happy for them. They wanted to achieve this goal, I’m not going to say the goal was to win (the state title), but they had the idea. They really wanted to compete and it became clear that we had the opportunity had to win, so it was great that they went through that.”
