Scotts Valley Softball defeats SLV to win the SCCAL title outright

Junior Abby Howell doubled, homered, drove in four runs and scored a run, and the Scotts Valley High softball team defeated San Lorenzo Valley 9-4 to clinch the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title outright on Friday.

Freshman Chloe Kent had three hits, including a pair of doubles, drove in one run and scored a run for the Falcons (14-6, 13-2). Junior Gracie Delgado had three hits and scored twice. Nick Powell had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run. Taylor Wilson doubled and scored twice. Natalie Murry-Skalland had a single and two RBI.

Junior Sofie Seese achieved the complete match win. She gave up five hits and four unearned runs.

Aptos (16-6, 12-3) finished second in the standings and SLV (15-10, 11-4) finished third.

Men’s tennis

The Stags (26-3) won the doubles competition, with Ian Freer defeating UCSC’s Praneet Varade 6-3, 6-2, and Warren Pham beating Hari Raghavan of the Banana Slugs 6-1, 6-2, to secure their lead to set. team win.

The Banana Slugs finish their season at 10-11.

High school baseball

Santa Cruz 8, Aptos 7: Kaden Smith’s single scored the winning run, and the Cardinals earned the victory in their SCCAL final on Friday.

Smith also scored a point. Emmet Desmond had two hits and scored twice for the Cardinals (12-12, 8-7), third in the league, Damos Deworken had two hits, one walk and scored a run.

Matt Hood had four hits, including a double, had one RBI and scored three runs for the Mariners, who won the national title for the fourth consecutive season. Nate Garcia had two singles with a double and scored a run. Isaiah Work had two hits and one RBI, and Eddie Peters had a hit, one RBI and scored a run.

Morgan Toohey pitched six innings for Santa Cruz, giving up five runs and six hits. He struckout five batters. Jason Graff pitched one inning and gave up two runs on three hits and one walk.

Jason Yager pitched six innings for Aptos. He gave up seven runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and four walks. He struckout three batters.

In nonleague action on Saturday, Santa Cruz plays at Leigh (16-9) at 11 a.m. and Aptos hosts Palma (15-11) at noon.

Scotts Valley 8, at SLV 8; 8 inn: Freshman Bryce McDonnell hit a two-run single to bring in Jack Abel and Jack Parker in the eighth inning of the SCCAL runner-up Falcons’ victory over the Cougars in the team competition finals Friday.

Quinn Turowski had three hits, three stolen bases and scored three runs for the Falcons (15-7, 10-5). Jacob Pauka had three hits, two RBI and scored twice. Lukas Bloom, Abel and Kaleb Wing each had two hits.

McDonnell also pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He struckout three batters and walked one. Corbin Giesen started and threw four innings.

Benji Stretch had two hits and three RBI for the Cougars (6-16-2, 2-12-1). Cody Houston had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice. John Clinkenbeard had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Jaden Shabry scored twice.

Scotts Valley plays at Willow Glen (11/15) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

In port 11, Soquel 6: Dominic DeLorenzo hit a double play and drove in three runs as the Pirates won their SCCAL final on Friday.
