The conference semifinals between the top-seeded Boston Celtics and the fifth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers move the venue to Ohio for the next two games. After their 118-94 victory on Thursday, the Cavaliers stole home field advantage from the Celtics.

Season series

Last season the teams played four times, with the Cavaliers winning three of the four games, while the Celtics turned their fortunes around this season, winning two of the three meetings. Boston holds the all-time record among teams with 139 wins in 226 games.

The clubs have a long history of the play-offs, having faced each other eight times previously and each winning four of the series. The last meeting took place in 2018, when the Cavs won 4-3.

*Editor’s note: Stats and rankings are current at the time of writing, Friday, May 10. The number of participants in competitions on Saturday, May 11 may vary slightly.

Boston Celtics

Ask anyone who picked the Celtics to win the title if they were surprised by the loss in Game 2 and chances are they weren’t. What should surprise them is that this team never seems to learn from their mistakes.

Just like in Round 1, they showed up with no investment and let the Cavs pelt them, and perhaps because they know they have an easy path to the Finals, it’s expected.

But being 14-14 at home in the last 28 playoff games at TD Garden is more than a little concerning, especially when they’ve let the limping Heat and less talented Cavaliers beat them.

Celtics Stats

Boston ranked first offensively (122.2) and was second defensively (110.6), while recording a net differential of plus +111.7, which also ranked first overall.

After two semifinal games, the Celtics rank fourth offensively (117.3) and third defensively (104.8), with a net differential of plus +12.5 ranking second .

In terms of the Celtics’ performance against the spread, they offer a record of 46-38-5 through 89 games.

Celtics injury report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Kristaps Porzingis, PF (OUT indefinitely calf)

Cleveland Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell continues to lead his side both on and off the field, taking second place in Thursday’s win. It was the first postseason road win for the Cavs. He scored 29 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in the win.

Evan Mobley had perhaps his best playoff game in a Cavaliers uniform with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, plus five assists, a steal and two blocks.

Cavaliers Stats

On the season, Cleveland ranked 16th offensively (114.7) and seventh defensively (112.1) with a net differential of plus +2.5 that ranked 12th overall.

So far in the playoffs, the Cavaliers rank 14th offensively (103.3) and fourth defensively (107.4) with a net differential of minus -4.1 at 12th.

Cleveland has performed below average against the spread with a 42-47-2 record in 91 games.

Cavaliers injury report

To summarize the injury report…

    • Jarrett Allen, C (Questionable – Ribs)
    • Craig Porter Jr., PG (OUT indefinitely – single)
    • Ty Jerome, PG (OUT indefinitely – single)
    • Dean Wade, PG (upgraded to questionable knee)

Free Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:

The Celtics remain the definitive favorites to come out of the East, but they must be careful not to take the Cavaliers and Mitchell (who has the ball) for granted and learn from their mistakes.

Like struggling to do all the other things that got them the best record in the association just because the 3-ball doesn’t drop. That said, Bean Town’s crew only shot four worse this season than Thursday, so it’s unlikely they’ll shoot 8-of-35 (22.9%) again.

I expect them to return to form on Saturday by winning and covering, and while the Cavs are playing better at home, I also expect Boston to step up their defensive efforts.
