Aston Villa transfer chief Monchi, who has been dubbed the ‘Messi of recruitment’ by the English press, has held talks with the representatives of Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho, amid speculation over a possible move to Villa Park.

According to a report from a football insider, Monchi met with Iheanacho’s camp in Greece ahead of Aston Villa’s Europa League second leg against Olympiacos on Thursday.

The meeting comes amid reports that Iheanacho has rejected another attempt by Leicester City to extend his current contract, which expires in June this year.

The 27-year-old forward is now likely to leave the Foxes on a free transfer, ending his seven-year spell at the King Power Stadium.

Aston Villa are keen to sign a new striker as a back-up to star striker Ollie Watkins, with Jhon Duran currently filling that role.

The potential arrival of Iheanacho would significantly boost Villa’s attacking options given his experience and goal-scoring ability.

Despite helping Leicester City claim the Championship title this season, Iheanacho has endured a frustrating campaign.

After deciding to stay at the club last summer to help them gain promotion, the Nigerian has seen his minutes in the squad drop significantly in recent months.

He scored just five goals in 23 appearances, which is a far cry from his expected performance as one of the best strikers in the Championship.

Aston Villa’s interest in Iheanacho is a clear indication of their ambition to strengthen their squad next season.

With the Nigerian’s contract expiring, Villa may be able to secure a free transfer, which would be a smart move for the club.
