THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Thiago Seyboth Wild will break into the top 60 on tour for the first time on Thursday after a comfortable opener against Gregoire Barrere. The Brazilian was a highly touted junior who suffered more than most when the Covid-19 pandemic halted the 2020 season, but he has come on leaps and bounds in the past 12 months, including famously stunning Daniil Medvedev at Roland-Garros last summer and finding now more consistent top results over the last few Masters events.

World number 27 Tomas Martin Etcheverry reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last summer to prove his credentials on his favorite clay, but the Argentine has struggled to make as much of an impact on the surface so far this year. A run to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month was ended by eventual champion Casper Ruud, but Etcheverry’s limp defeat to Jaume Munar at the Provence Challenger last week does not bode well against the improving Seyboth Wild. The cautious approach backs the Argentinian to at least earn a set, but the smart move could be the same in favor of the in-form Brazilian, who has real momentum behind him.
