Pleasants’ heroics Wednesday at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn capped the longest game in SEC tournament history, surpassing the previous record set by the Lady Vols’ 1-0 win over Mississippi State in 13 innings in the SEC 2022 Softball Tournament .

Heading into the bottom of the 14th inning, LSU left seven runners on base while in scoring position. From an individual standpoint, it was just the sixth RBI Pleasants has recorded in the past two months – a feat that both Pleasants and the Tigers hope to use as momentum to get her bat going in the postseason.

Sydney Berzon sets SEC Softball Tournament record for innings pitched

Of course, when a game starts at 10am CT and goes fourteen innings deep, this isn’t the only record set.

Tigers sophomore ace Sydney Berzon set the SEC Softball Tournament record for most innings pitched in a single game as the LSU starter went the distance, pitching the full 14 innings. The native of Buffalo, New York finished with 208 pitches, 129 of which were for strikes, across 56 batters facing him. Perhaps more impressively, of the 42 outs Berzon got on Wednesday, only five came via strikeout.

“I told Coach yesterday that I would do whatever it took and I wouldn’t back down,” Berzon told SEC Network’s Alyssa Lang after the game. “I found it in me and I made it work.”

The previous record for most innings pitched by a pitcher in an SEC Softball Tournament game was 13 ⅓ innings.

Ali Newland game-saving catch in the 11th inning

LSU’s big day almost didn’t happen.

In the bottom of the eleventh, Alabama had a runner-in scoring position on second with two outs. White seemed to have gotten enough going to stick the game-winning hit into left field for the Crimson Tide, but then came LSU left fielder Ali Newland who made the game-saving diving catch on the left field foul line.

No. 10 LSU (39-14 overall, 12-12 in SEC play) now advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals for a date with No. 2 and No. 1 seed Tennessee (40-9, 19-4). The first pitch is at 10am CT on the SEC Network. The Lady Vols won the regular season series against the Tigers 2-1.
