Orlando Pirates sign star PSL defender

Orlando Pirates have reported that they have secured the services of talented SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes for next season.

Despite being only 23 years old, Johannes already has more than 70 top flight appearances to his name. The speedy full-back made his name at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) before joining SuperSport United in 2021.

According to the latest reports, Jose Riveiro’s side have swooped in to sign the talented defender in a big money transfer!

Johannes had recently signed a new contract extension with SuperSport United, meaning Orlando Pirates had to spend the big money for their cause.

“SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes is on his way to Orlando Pirates next season,” a spokesperson said Sports thread report read.

“Pirates are aiming to strengthen their squad for their upcoming CAF club competition campaign next season, having secured qualification through their Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns on June 1 at Mbombela Stadium.

“As Sportswire has been advised that the deal has been completed, Johannes would join the club he scored against in a DStv Premiership match at Orlando Stadium in March 2022.”

In other news, it looks like Orlando Pirates will send youngster Cebo Mchunu out on loan again next season.

The Buccaneers signed the talented winger at the start of the season from Bizana Pondo Chiefs but he was immediately loaned out to Pretoria Callies.

After spending a season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the 22-year-old was hoping to return to the club to fight for a place in Jose Riveiro’s squad in June.

However, it now appears that the club have decided to send their rising star out on loan again.

A new loan deal is looming for the Orlando Pirates youngster

“Although he is a good player, the club feels that he has not yet reached the standard that will make him a permanent fixture at the club next season. Therefore, he is ready for another loan move. He will not be the first be a player who does that,” says a source Football Laduma.

The source went on to make comparisons between Mchunu and Thembinkosi Lorch, who was also loaned out twice by the club during his decade-long spell with Orlando Pirates.

“Even Thembinkosi Lorch was loaned out twice before returning to the team. Then Lorch became a regular. It helps the players to grow and gain experience. It is good for both the player and the club and that is why they will loan him out again next season,” the source said.

Lorch is eternally grateful to Irvin Khoza

The speedy winger scored 34 goals for Orlando Pirates and assisted a further 30. In total, Lorch made 176 appearances for the Soweto giants.

Lorch joined the Buccaneers in 2013 from Maluti FET University. He also spent two seasons on loan from the Buccaneers with Cape Town All Stars and Chippa United respectively.

“I remember signing for Orlando Pirates at the age of 22. I (just) left (as a) 30-year-old. So I am grateful for the opportunity he (Khoza) has given me. Orlando Pirates will always have a special place in my heart,” Lorch said after his move in January, as quoted by Sowetan.

“I would also like to thank the president of Sundowns (Tlhopie Motsepe) for believing in me and bringing me here. I’m looking forward to doing my best for this team, that’s all I can say.”
