The Avalon boys volleyball team has a chance to make history and win the program’s first-ever CIF Southern Section championship as the Lancers will play at Ontario Christian in the CIF-SS Division 7 Finals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lancers (23-11) advanced to the program’s first-ever championship game with a 3-0 win at home against Calvary Chapel in the semifinals on Monday, providing redemption after Avalon lost their first game of the season 2-0 of Grizzlies on February 17.

Avalon junior Jacob Mello had a game-high 16 kills and 12 digs. Erick Madriz added 11 kills. Aaron had 38 assists. Uriel Gonzales had 32 digs.

This team is remarkable in what they can do with what we have,” Avalon coach Carlos Martinez said. “They are getting better every game.

“We have been the underdogs in the last two games and have come out victorious. The click between the boys is really good, we just play together.”

Martinez said Avalon’s four-game winning streak in the playoffs is a testament to the team’s character and dedication.

This season has been absolutely incredible. I don’t have club players, but these guys are really sloppy,” Martinez continued. “They have a lot of fight in them and play so well together. They have gotten stronger and stronger as the season has gone on, but what I like most about our team is that they never give up.”

Avalon also defeated La Mirada, St. Paul and Vasquez in the first round, second round and quarterfinals, respectively.
