There was quite a hustle and bustle at the Vidarbha Hockey Association (VHA) grounds on Wednesday evening. For the first time, the Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy (MPHA) left the region and came to Nagpur to select players for the renowned academy. Around 60 players from Hyderabad, Mumbai, Balewadi Pune, excluding Amravati, Armori, Bhandara, Gondia, Yavatmal, Buldhana, Bramhapuri and Nagpur, appeared for the trials held under the watchful eye of hockey Olympian Sameer Dad, who coached the academy. During the trial matches we saw the players playing fast hockey. Dad was impressed with the talent. “These kids are really talented. They have skills and endurance. I am really impressed,” said Dad while speaking to ‘The Hitavada’. “This is the first time that we are leaving Madhya Pradesh to pick players for our academy. Irshad Mirza asked me to look at the talent of Vidarbha players and we decided to see what this region is proud of.

I am happy that we have come here,” said Papa, who was accompanied by other selectors including Dr Habib Hasan and Lokendra Sharma. The selection tests will be conducted in five phases, of which Nagpur will be the second. “We have completed phase one where we visited Guna, Gwalior, Murena and Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh. From Nagpur we will move to Seoni, Baitul, Itarsi, Jabalpur, Damoh, Tikamgarhand Sagar,” said Dad, who was part of the Indian team that participated in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The trials were held in the Under 14 and Under 18 age categories. Irshad Mirza, Bablu Neware and Umesh Yadav assisted during the trials. Earlier, dad and his team were welcomed by social worker Kishor Jichkar, Harish Kapoor, Krishna Joshi, Shahnawaz Khan and others.
