Mixed-income housing, including for the homeless, is breaking new ground in La Crosse

A groundbreaking was held Wednesday for several dozen new apartments at 4th and Jackson streets in La Crosse.

The residential complex is called The Collective on 4th. It will include 62 units for mixed-income tenants.

Some of these apartments will be reserved for tenants who have recently become homeless.

“Affordable housing was a top priority,” said Nicole Solheim, vice president of Cinnaire Solutions, which is developing the homes. “It’s something new to add to the neighborhood, and there are also some units that are set aside for individuals who may be at risk of homelessness, so we really want to address that and combine it with community resources, programs and services on site. ”

The project is located about five blocks west of the University of Viterbo. Viterbo’s director of the DB Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership, Dr. Rick Kyte, spoke during Wednesday’s ceremony about the value of knowing your neighbors.

“We can talk about housing, we can talk about solutions,” Kyte told an audience during the ceremony. “What we have to remember is that each of these units is a home, and every resident of those homes is our neighbor. And I’m just so proud to live in a place where neighbors get to know each other, and we can be proud of that.”

The four-storey Collective Building should be completed in the spring of 2025 and the first units will be available in June.
