LSG owner’s outburst at KL Rahul goes viral; Fans slam Sanjiv Goenka

After Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered a 10-wicket thrashing from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in an IPL 2024 match on Wednesday evening (May 8), the team owner was seen having an animated conversation with captain KL Rahul.

Chasing 166, SRH openers Travis Head (89 not out off 30 balls) and Abhishek Sharma (75 off 28 balls) reached the target in just 9.4 overs and scored 167/0, setting records in the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Rahul said he was at a loss for words.

“I’m out of words. We’ve seen this kind of percussion on TV. But this is unreal hitting. Everything seemed to find the center of the bat. Kudos for their skills. They have worked hard on their six-hitting skills. They didn’t give us a chance to know what the pitch was playing in the second innings. It was hard to stop them when they teed off from ball one,” he said.

The video of LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka reprimanding Rahul has gone viral and fans are furious with Goenka.

Many on social media have slammed Goenka for slamming Rahul in front of the cameras, with some opining that if he had wanted to have a conversation with the LSG captain, he should have done so behind closed doors.

Star sports, the host channel of IPL 2024, captioned the video of the Goenka-Rahul conversation as “animated reactions from the LSG camp”. For most of the conversation, Rahul remains calm and speaks only a few words. Goenka was also seen talking to LSG coach and former Australian opener Justin Langer.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith felt the owner was ‘passionate’ and said the conversation should have taken place behind closed doors.

“It’s the owner who is very passionate about his team. His team has taken an absolute beating and the emotions have spilled over. You believe these conversations should take place behind closed doors. There are so many cameras around; they don’t miss anything. KL Rahul would now go to press conferences and other things and possibly explain what was discussed,” Smith said on IPL’s official streaming channel JioCinema.

Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said Goenka expressed his dissatisfaction with the way LSG played.

“It’s on his head, isn’t it? He voices his concerns and KL says, “Wait a minute, I don’t know exactly what you’re asking of us.” Today it was pretty clear. SRH were on the field from the first ball and LSG were a bit conservative in terms of how they went about their business. If you compare that to the way Sunrisers play, there was undoubtedly a clear gap. He expresses his displeasure,” Hesson said on the streaming platform.

“He has done well to keep a cool head here,” said former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris on the streaming platform.
