THE PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek completed her run of the most prestigious clay court titles on tour with a thrilling win over Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid last Saturday, beating the defending champion in a three-set classic. The 22-year-old won back-to-back Rome Masters titles in 2021 and 2022, handing a double bagel to Karolina Pliskova in the first, hugely foreshadowing the dominant force she would become on clay. The defeat to Elena Rybakina in Stuttgart proved that she can be beaten on her favorite surface.

World number 77 Bernarda Pera has had a strong qualifying campaign and brought momentum into her first round clash with Caroline Dolehide. She defeated her compatriot in straight sets, but this should be far too much of a challenge. The 27-year-old is also at her best on clay, but Swiatek is the absolute benchmark in these conditions, on either side of the tours at the moment, and she can be backed to start strongly in straight sets.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK WINS 2-0
