Miller named a finalist for the 2023-24 America East Woman of the Year Award

BOSTON – UMBC Volleyball Aysia Molenaar has been named a finalist for the 2023-24 America East Conference Man of the Year award, the conference announced Monday.

To be nominated, student-athletes must have competed in an America East-sponsored sport and completed intercollegiate participation in their primary sport before the end of the 2024 spring term, or completed their bachelor’s degree before the end of the 2024 summer term, and have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2,500 (scale of 4,000). Institutions may submit up to two nominees for each award if at least one student-athlete is from an international or ethnic minority group.

A three-time America East All-Conference honoree and winner of both the America East Setter of the Year and the America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, Miller played every position on the court in 2023 and earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team as an OH/S/L/DS, while also being named to the All-Academic Team for the third year in a row. The rest of her illustrious career is summarized below:

2022: America East Defensive Specialist of The Year with her first season as a libero…America East All-Championship Team, Second Team All-America East and All-Academic Team…Led the America East Conference with 4.14 digs per set …America East Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year… Had a career high, finishing sixth all-time in a single match with 30 digs and seven assists against Delaware… Finished with a team high nine digs in the NCAA tournament against Penn State… Became the 13th member of the 400 dig club, with 418 total digs during the 2022 season.

Fall 2021: America East All-Championship Team and America East All-Academic Team…Planned to return to the role of defensive specialist, but injuries forced her to start the season as a setter for the first eight games and then switch to outside hitter. .Had 42 assists and 19 digs against South Florida and then 39 assists and 15 digs against Rutgers… Had 15 kills and 15 digs against Quinnipiac in her first match as an outside hitter… Had the best game of her career in the America East Semifinal, with a pair of career highs with 17 kills and 24 digs.

Spring 2021: Was recruited and entered the preseason as a defensive specialist, but was used as a setter prior to the first match and was subsequently named America East Setter of the Year (UMBC’s first since 2013 and only second ever)… Named after the America East All-Conference Second Team and the America East All-Rookie Team…Was named conference-best Setter of the Week four times during the season, along with three Rookie of the Week awards…Led the America East and was 31st in the entire NCAA with 10.65 digs per set… Also averaged 2.54 digs per set… Had a career-high 58 assists and added 12 digs in the America East Championship- game against UAlbany… Set a UMBC freshman record with 55 assists against Stony Brook on Feb. 27… Had 47 assists and a season-best 23 digs in five set wins at Stony Brook on Feb. 28… Finished the season with 607 assists , 145 digs and 31 kills.

The nominees will be narrowed down to three finalists per gender, who will be announced on Wednesday, May 29. The 2023-24 America East Man and Woman of the Year will be unveiled on Wednesday, June 5, at the conference’s annual awards dinner.
