NFL rookies Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers make a friendly bet; possibly in violation of league policy

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and freshman New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers are friends.

The two have starred at LSU over the past few seasons and have had a great relationship on the field. This relationship is one of the reasons why Daniels was selected No. 2 overall, with Nabers being the sixth pick.

These two are also considered early favorites to take home the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Speaking of a recent one The twist podcast, Daniels and Nabers made a seemingly innocent bet on who would come away with the prize (h/t Pro Football Talk).

The point here is that this bet would force the loser to pay out $10,000, creating a potential conflict with the NFL’s archaic gambling policy.

As PFT notes, this is a violation of said policy.

β€œIt includes commercial gambling (whether for profit, charity or otherwise) involving third parties (e.g. bookmakers, dealers, ‘the house’), as well as private betting between teammates, family and friends, or others.”

We have seen several NFL players suspended in the past for betting on games. Some bet on actual NFL matchups, which should be widely known as a violation of league policy. Others were suspended for betting on college football games while at a team facility.

That’s the problem with this policy. Of course, players are required to read it. But the policy itself has a broad scope.

This also comes amid a modern sports culture in which professional sports leagues collaborate with sportsbooks and oddsmakers, creating more and more problems.

As for Daniels and Nabers, things are going great. The NFL will likely send them a letter to cancel the bet. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see further problems in the future.
